Sailors of the past discovered that certain winds would always be in specific locations, which helped them travel better and made them rich. But why are these winds present on our planet? The Earth is titled on an axis, which means that the sun’s rays hit many areas at different angles.
Therefore, the surface of the planet is not heated equally. Normally, the equator and therefore the tropics get more heat than other places in the world. Cold air is denser and creates high-pressure pockets, while hot air is less dense and creates low-pressure pockets.
Wind flows from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas and due to the rotation of the earth, the air flows in a similar curved movement. That’s known as the Coriolis effect, which is the reason why winds travel in certain ways.
